January 2004 PETA's Restaurant of the Month: Craving a Philly cheesesteak, but don't want to cheat on your new year's resolution to lose weight? Head on over to Gianna's Grille in Philly. Gianna's GG Special won't doom your diet because it's 100% vegan and 100% delicious. Oh and did we mention all the desserts including the decadent homemade cheesecakes are vegan?! Gianna's owners Babs and Paul opened the restaurant (named after their daughter) in 1997 with the goal of providing a place where everyone could have a great meal, vegan or not. It's working, Gianna's has developed a following among meat eaters and vegetarians alike!! America's Top 10 Vegetarian Friendly Cities: Honorable mention: Philadelphia. No trip to Philly would be complete without a jaunt to Gianna's Grille which has the best vegan pizza and sandwiches in America! A&e Hip-O-Meter (Philly Weekly): Local veggie favorite makes good with appointment by PETA as vegetarian restaurant of the month. Since we're filthy dirty meat eaters this doesn't mean much, but word has it that Gianna's cheesesteak is to die for! Gianna's Grille = in!! Philadelphia Independent: The 1st of the vegetarian sandwich spots at its new South Street location. The sandwiches are just as good as ever, and now there are more of them and they have cute names. My favorite has always been the Vito, a soy sausage sandwich. This new place is bigger with more tables and husband and wife team is now joined by an employee. Also I like to be called bro and listen to Led Zeppelin while I eat, no joke. Philadelphia Daily News (Stu Bykofsky): Gianna's has just opened up at 507 S. 6th Street, offering a large menu of vegetarian and vegan sandwiches, pizza and desserts. Paul and Babs moved the restaurant, named after their daughter, from Walnut Street. Don't worry carnivores, they also serve traditional steaks and pizza. Average price $6.00. Philly Weekly (Heather M. Duffy): Established in 1997, Gianna's Grille opened its new location on 6th street, between Lombard and South. Gianna's is operated by a husband and wife team who named the restaurant after their daughter. Offering meat, vegetarian and vegan sandwiches, pizza, sides and salads, Gianna's is a great option for veggie eaters with carnivorous friends. The restaurants motto "Homemade Eats, Vegan Treats" rings especially true when you see the peanut butter bomb and strawberry mousse cake in the dessert case. Another noteworthy recommendation is the Freebird, a pleasantly overstuffed vegetarian chicken cheesesteak, but you really can't go wrong with any selection. Prices are great for any budget.
So I come to Gianna's with a vegetarian friend and expect to eat salad or something. I leave having the best cheesesteak I ever ate! Everyone must try the Godfather- good stuff! Peter D.
